How does this Hepatitis B vaccination work?

You book online or call. A short questionnaire lets our pharmacist screen any medical issues before your visit so the clinic runs smoothly.

At the appointment we confirm consent, explain the disease, and give the first injection in your upper arm. Standard protection needs three doses at zero, one, and six months. Where rapid cover is required we offer the accelerated four‑dose course at zero, one, two, and twelve months.

We record the batch number in your digital record, arrange reminders, and check your antibody level after the series if you work with blood. A routine booster is no longer required for most travellers once the primary course is complete.

Who should get vaccinated?

Hepatitis B spreads through blood and body fluids. You need protection if you:

  • Travel to regions with higher infection rates
  • Work in healthcare, dentistry, or emergency services
  • Share household with a chronic carrier
  • Play contact sports where bleeding injuries occur
  • Plan long stays in Asia, Africa, South America, Eastern Europe
  • Are a student on an elective abroad

Plan doses before departure

Book at least four to six weeks before you fly so the first two doses can start immunity and paperwork is ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fulham Palace Pharmacy
  • Why should I consider Hepatitis B vaccination?

Hepatitis B attacks the liver and spreads through contaminated blood, needles, dental work, and sexual contact. Overseas healthcare can be variable, and injuries can occur while travelling or working. England’s public health report confirms ongoing cases, mainly in unvaccinated adults. Protection by vaccination removes the worry and supports the national elimination target.

  • How many injections do I need?

Most adults receive three injections: day 0, after one month, and after six months. The accelerated option delivers doses at 0, 1, and 2 weeks with a booster at 12 months, useful when time is short. Both schedules give similar long‑term antibody levels when completed.

  • When does protection start?

Antibodies rise after your second dose, but full protection develops two to four weeks after the final dose. Finish the course as early as possible for reliable cover on high‑risk trips or placements.

  • Is the vaccine safe and what reactions occur?

UK‑licensed vaccines are inactivated and cannot cause infection. Most people notice only a sore arm for a day. Fewer than one in ten report mild fever or headache. Severe reactions are extremely rare. Tell the pharmacist if you have a yeast allergy.

  • Can children have it?

Yes. The vaccine forms part of the routine infant schedule at 8, 12, and 16 weeks, using a hexavalent product that also covers diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and Hib. Extra doses are given at birth when mums carry the virus.

  • Can it be given with other travel jabs?

The injection can be administered on the same day as typhoid, Hepatitis  A, or yellow fever in separate arms. Your pharmacist will check spacing rules and record each product in your booklet.

  • Do I need a booster if I was vaccinated years ago?

For healthy travellers who completed a full primary course, a routine five‑year booster is no longer required. People at ongoing occupational risk may need post‑course antibody testing and occasional boosters if their level falls.
