How Does This Service Work For Fulham

Starting a new prescription can raise questions. The New Medicine Service gives you structured support during the first four weeks, when most problems emerge. Our pharmacists are trained under the NHS Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework 2024 to deliver safe, evidence based follow up.

What you can expect

Step 1 Initial chat

Bring your prescription or collection slip. A pharmacist checks understanding, explains dosage, and records goals.

Step 2 Seven day review

A phone or face to face check identifies early side effects, missed doses, or practical barriers such as inhaler technique.

Step 3 Week four check

We review symptom control, agree next steps, and update your GP if adjustment is needed.

Step 4 Any time access

Call or pop in whenever you need extra reassurance between appointments.

Why it helps

Evidence from NHS England shows NMS improves adherence by twelve percent, saving GP appointments and preventing medicine waste. Many Fulham residents report fewer unwanted effects and better control of long term conditions such as asthma, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Consultations take place in our private room. Your data stays confidential and is stored in line with General Pharmaceutical Council guidance.

Everything is free because it is an NHS commissioned service. No appointment fee, no hidden charge. You only need to live in Fulham, Kensington, Battersea, Putney, Hammersmith, or Chelsea and present an eligible first prescription.

Friendly staff, short wait, and clear advice. I now take my tablets with meals and feel less nausea.

Excellent private room and plenty of time to talk. I left with practical tips and confidence.

I used to forget doses. The pharmacist suggested a simple phone alarm. Adherence is much better now, sugars down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fulham Palace Pharmacy
  • Who is eligible for the New Medicine Service?

Anyone registered with an English GP and starting a new medicine for a long term condition listed by NHS England can use NMS. You need to live or work near Fulham, Kensington, Battersea, Putney, Hammersmith, or Chelsea. Bring your first prescription or the collection counterfoil. If unsure, ask our team. We will confirm eligibility in minutes and explain the next steps. The service is free because it is funded by the NHS.

  • What happens during my first appointment?

You meet a pharmacist in a private room. We check how much you already know about the medicine, agree a dose routine, discuss potential side effects, and set goals such as blood pressure targets. The conversation usually lasts fifteen minutes. Nothing is rushed, and you can ask any question.

  • How many follow ups will I have?

You get at least two reviews within four weeks. The first happens around day seven, the second around week four. Extra checks are arranged if you experience issues, change dose, or request more support. Follow ups can be in person or by phone, whichever suits you.

  • Is the service really free?

Yes. NMS is paid for by the NHS. You will never receive a bill from us for the consultation. The only cost you may pay is the standard prescription charge, if you are not exempt, for the medicine itself.

  • Will this replace my GP visit?

No. NMS complements your GP care. We handle practical medicine questions, minor side effects, and adherence coaching. Serious clinical issues are escalated to your GP promptly, with a written summary so you avoid repeating details.

  • What conditions are covered?

Asthma, COPD, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapy, gout, epilepsy, heart failure, glaucoma, Parkinson disease, and any other category later added by NHS England. Ask if your new medicine is not on the list.
