Fulham Palace Pharmacy

How does this service work?

Pharmacy First is an NHS England scheme launched on 31 January 2024. It lets community pharmacists treat seven common conditions, including earache, with prescription medicines if needed.

You walk in to Fulham Palace Pharmacy without appointment. A pharmacist will discuss your symptoms, use a light to inspect your ear, and advise on pain relief. If necessary, they supply ear drops or antibiotics under our local protocols. The whole process takes under 20 minutes.

If your symptoms suggest a more serious issue, we’ll refer you to a GP or hospital. This ensures you receive the right care at the right time.

Signs and symptoms to watch

Earache often starts with mild discomfort. You may feel throbbing pain or pressure. Reduced hearing can follow. Look out for these warning signs:

  • Persistent pain lasting over 48 hours
  • Fluid or pus draining from the ear
  • Hearing loss or muffled sound
  • High temperature above 38 °C
  • Irritability or disturbed sleep in children

If you notice any of these, visit Fulham Palace Pharmacy promptly.

Tips for at-home relief

While waiting for professional care, you can ease discomfort with simple measures:

  • Apply a warm compress to the outer ear
  • Take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed
  • Keep your head elevated to reduce pressure
  • Avoid water entering the ear canal
  • Stay well hydrated and rest in a quiet room

These steps support our treatment and help you feel better faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fulham Palace Pharmacy
  • What is Pharmacy First for earache?

Pharmacy First lets you see a pharmacist for common conditions without a GP appointment. For earache, our pharmacists assess your symptoms, examine your ear, and can supply prescription medicines under NHS protocols if needed. If your condition is outside the service criteria, they advise on over-the-counter options or refer you to a GP.

  • Who can use this earache service?

Anyone aged one to seventeen with moderate or severe earache not eased by pain relief qualifies. If you are outside this age range, our team can still offer advice on earwax removal or OTC treatments. We’re happy to explain your options and refer you on if required.

  • How long does the consultation take?

You can expect the consultation to last 10–15 minutes. This covers symptom discussion, ear examination, and advice. If we supply medication, the process may take a few extra minutes while the prescription is prepared. You can wait in our seating area – no appointment means flexible timing.

  • Do I need to book in advance?

You can but it's not required. Just walk in to Fulham Palace Pharmacy during our opening hours. If you prefer, you can call ahead or book online. Walk-ins are welcome, and we aim to see you as soon as possible.

  • Will my visit appear on my GP record?

Yes, we record the consultation on your NHS record so your GP is kept informed. This helps maintain continuity of care. The information includes your symptoms, treatment supplied, and any referrals made.

  • What if I need antibiotics?

Our pharmacist assesses whether antibiotics are clinically appropriate. If so, they supply them under NHS guidelines. If antibiotics aren’t needed, they recommend suitable pain-relief measures and advise on home care to prevent complications.

  • What if my earache returns?

If symptoms persist or worsen within 48 hours of treatment, return for a follow-up. We’ll reassess and update your care plan. If the issue is more serious, we refer you to a GP or hospital for further tests.
