Under the NHS Pharmacy First scheme, community pharmacists supply antibiotics for uncomplicated UTIs without a GP visit.
Women aged 16 to 64 with typical bladder infection symptoms can access treatment at Fulham Palace Pharmacy. Eligibility follows clinical criteria for uncomplicated UTIs.
Your pharmacist conducts a private consultation, checks symptoms and risk factors, and offers analgesia or antibiotics under a PGD. You receive clear guidance on dosing and side effects.
If symptoms persist beyond 48 hours or worsen, you return for reassessment or referral to GP or urgent care. We provide safety-netting advice throughout.
Tips for Managing UTI Symptoms
A few simple measures help ease discomfort before antibiotics take effect:
- Drink plenty water to flush bacteria
- Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks
- Try a warm heat pack on your lower abdomen
- Use gentle, unscented soap for genital hygiene
Preventing Future Infections
Small lifestyle changes lower UTI risk:
- Wipe front to back after toileting
- Urinate before and after sexual activity
- Stay hydrated throughout the day
- Wear breathable cotton underwear
- Avoid tight synthetic clothing

The Pharmacy First UTI service lets you see a trained pharmacist for assessment and treatment of uncomplicated bladder infections. You avoid a GP appointment and get antibiotics in-store if clinically appropriate. The service follows NHS guidelines for safe prescribing and self-care advice.
Most patients notice symptom improvement within 24 to 48 hours of starting antibiotics. You’ll receive guidance on pain relief and hydration to support recovery. If there’s no improvement after two days, return for reassessment or GP referral.
You can walk in at any opening hours. Booking ahead secures your slot, but urgent cases are seen same day where possible. Call ahead if you have mobility or privacy needs.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women aren’t eligible under this PGD. You’ll be referred back to your GP or midwife for specialist UTI management in pregnancy.
If you’ve taken nitrofurantoin in the past three months, you may need GP review. Your pharmacist will review your medication history and refer you if antibiotics aren’t suitable.
Common antibiotic side effects include mild stomach upset or skin rash. You’ll get advice on managing these and when to stop treatment. Serious reactions are rare; contact us or seek urgent care if you develop severe symptoms.
