How this service keeps Fulham families well

You book online or by phone. We confirm your child’s age and invite you in. The visit is calm, friendly and quick. Your child receives the nasal spray in each nostril and can leave within minutes.

Most two and three year olds receive the nasal spray. It is quick and painless. If the spray is not suitable, an injectable flu vaccine is available. We explain the reasons and agree the best option with you on the day.

Your pharmacist checks a few points for safety. Tell us about recent wheeze, steroid tablets, aspirin use, severe allergy history, or close contact with someone who is very severely immunosuppressed. These details help us choose the right vaccine and timing.

Mild effects are common and settle in a day or two. A blocked nose, tiredness, loss of appetite or a headache can occur. Protection builds over about fourteen days, so booking early in the season is sensible.

What to bring and expect

  • Red Book if you have it
  • Your child’s medicines and allergy details
  • Loose, comfy clothing
  • Snacks and a favourite toy
  • A short wait for observation
  • Simple aftercare advice to take home

Children aged two or three are eligible this season. From October, many pharmacies like ours also offer NHS appointments for this age group.

Is the spray right for my child

The spray suits most healthy children aged two and three. It is quick, painless and helps reduce spread in homes and nurseries. Some children need the injection instead. We check this with you during the appointment and explain the reasons. nhs.uk

The spray may not be suitable if your child has

  • Severe allergy to an ingredient in the spray
  • A very weakened immune system or close contact with someone who has this
  • Long term aspirin therapy or recent wheeze
  • Preference for a non porcine option

An injectable alternative can be offered when suitable.

Simple steps to make the visit smooth

Plan a calm day. Avoid tight schedules straight after the vaccine. Offer water, snacks and reassurance. Use gentle distraction like bubbles or a favourite book. Keep nasal passages clear before the appointment where possible. Ask us anything at any time.

Aftercare tips

  • Normal play is fine
  • Rest if tired
  • Fluids help recovery
  • Paracetamol can be used if needed, as on the label
  • Seek help if breathing problems, facial swelling or a widespread rash occur

Frequently Asked Questions

Fulham Palace Pharmacy
  • Who is this service for?

This NHS service is for children aged two and three on 31 August of the current season. If your child is in this age group, they can have the flu vaccine. Most receive a quick nasal spray. Some children will need the injection instead.

  • How does the nasal spray work and will my child feel it?

The spray is a fine mist placed into each nostril. It is quick and most children barely notice it. No sniffing is needed. Your child can breathe normally during the spray. The appointment is usually finished in minutes.

  • Are there reasons my child should not have the spray today?

Most children can have the spray. There are situations where we postpone or consider the injection. If your child has a heavy cold with a very blocked nose, we may delay or offer the injection. If they are very unwell with fever, we wait.

  • What side effects should I expect and what helps?

Common effects after the spray include a blocked or runny nose, mild tiredness, headache or reduced appetite. These settle within one or two days. After the injection, a sore arm, a slight temperature or muscle aches can occur and settle quickly.

  • How effective is it and does my child still need it every year?

Effectiveness varies by season and by child. The vaccine targets the most common strains each year. Even if flu is still caught, illness is usually milder and hospital care is less likely. Real world data support clear benefit across seasons.
