How does this service work?

Losing or emptying your blue inhaler can feel scary. Fulham Palace Pharmacy bridges the gap by supplying a salbutamol 100 microgram metered-dose inhaler under our authorised Patient Group Direction for anyone aged sixteen or over who already uses reliever therapy .

Your visit lasts about twenty minutes. A pharmacist confirms asthma diagnosis, checks you have no beta-blockers, heart disease, or other exclusions, then records peak flow and symptom history. We also ask when you last used steroids or attended hospital.

After eligibility is confirmed we supply one inhaler and teach correct shake-breathe-hold technique. Many people waste half the dose through poor timing; slowing breath and holding for ten seconds boosts lung delivery.

You leave with a personalised card showing:

  • Correct dose (one to two puffs)
  • Maximum eight puffs in 24 hours
  • Signs that need urgent care
  • Date to request a repeat prescription

We book a follow-up call within two weeks. This covers daytime and night-time use patterns, inhaler counts, and whether a preventer needs stepping up. If technique is perfect yet use still high, we suggest GP review.

Salbutamol can cause tremor or racing heart. These settle quickly but note any change and tell us. Seek medical help if relief lasts under three hours or you need more puffs than usual.

Good control relies on three daily habits: carry your reliever, use your preventer as prescribed, and track peak flow twice a week. Our team shows you how to log readings on your phone so trends are clear.

Right technique equals stronger relief

Up to 90 per cent of patients mis-time their inhaler. A slow steady breath lets more medicine reach small airways and reduces side effects.

  • Sit or stand upright
  • Exhale fully first
  • Start breathing in, press canister once
  • Continue slow inhalation 4-5 seconds
  • Hold breath ten seconds

Know your personal triggers

Common triggers include cold air, pollen, smoke, viral infections, and stress. Spotting patterns helps you act early.

  • Use scarves in cold weather
  • Check daily pollen counts
  • Ask friends to avoid smoking indoors
  • Have a spare inhaler at work
  • Keep vaccination up to date

Lost inhaler on the bus. Pharmacy had me breathing easy in fifteen minutes. Clear guidance and friendly staff.

Technique refresher was invaluable. Peak flow already better. Appreciate the calm, no-rush approach.

Weekend visit saved a hospital trip. Follow-up call checked on me two days later. Great care.

First time someone explained inhaler timing properly. Tremor reduced once I slowed my breath.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fulham Palace Pharmacy
  • Who should use this service?

Anyone over sixteen with diagnosed asthma who has lost, run out of, or damaged their usual salbutamol inhaler can attend. You must already use blue reliever inhalers and have no contraindications such as beta-blocker therapy, certain heart conditions, or overactive thyroid. Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should see their GP. Our pharmacist checks eligibility, supplies one inhaler, and updates your record.

  • What happens during the visit?

You meet a trained pharmacist in a private room. We verify asthma history, measure peak flow, review current preventer use, and watch you demonstrate inhaler technique. After supply we create an action card detailing doses, red-flag symptoms, and follow-up steps. The entire process takes about twenty minutes.

  • How much salbutamol can I use?

One to two puffs relieve symptoms. Wait four hours before repeating. Do not exceed eight puffs in twenty-four hours. If you need more, or if relief lasts under three hours, seek medical review.

  • Will this replace my preventer inhaler?

No. The blue inhaler offers short-term relief. Good asthma control depends on regular use of your preventer steroid inhaler. We remind you to reorder preventers and can liaise with your GP if supplies are low.

  • Are there side effects?

Common effects include fine hand tremor, headache, or a fast heartbeat. They pass quickly. Serious reactions are rare. Tell us if side effects feel severe or if you are taking any new medicines.

  • Can I get more than one inhaler?

This emergency PGD allows one inhaler per visit. A second supply is blocked for thirty days and more than two supplies in six months is not permitted. Frequent emergency requests signal poor control and need a GP review.

  • Do you notify my GP?

We can share a summary with your GP if you consent. This keeps your records aligned and helps your practice plan future reviews.
