What is RSV and why does it matter?

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that spreads through coughs and sneezes. Most people recover within a week or two. But for older adults, those with weakened immunity, and people with certain long-term conditions, RSV can lead to serious chest infections, pneumonia, and hospital admission.

Until recently, there was no vaccine. Now two RSV vaccines are available on the NHS and privately. They offer strong protection against severe RSV disease. If you are over 60, or younger with specific health conditions, this vaccine could matter to you.

Do you need the RSV vaccine?

The answer depends on your age and health.

You are most likely to benefit if:

You are aged 60 or over. RSV hospitalisations rise sharply in this group.

You have chronic heart or lung disease, diabetes, or a weakened immune system. RSV poses higher risk.

You live with or care for very young children or frail older people. Vaccination reduces your chance of carrying the virus to them.

You may still benefit if:

You are aged 50 to 59 with significant health conditions. Your GP can advise on individual risk.

You travel frequently or spend time in crowded settings. RSV spreads easily in winter.

You should seek personalised advice if:

You are pregnant, severely immunocompromised, or have a condition not listed here. Your GP or pharmacist can assess your individual situation.

How the RSV vaccine works

The vaccine teaches your immune system to recognise and fight RSV before you encounter it naturally. One dose gives protection that lasts through the winter season and into spring.

The vaccine is given as a single injection into the upper arm. You do not need boosters each year, though protection may wane over time. Your pharmacist will discuss whether a second dose might suit you in future years.

Side effects are usually mild: a sore arm, mild fever, or fatigue for a day or two. Serious reactions are rare.

Common questions about RSV vaccination

Can I get the RSV vaccine if I have had RSV before?

Yes. Past infection does not give lasting immunity. The vaccine works even if you have had RSV.

Is the RSV vaccine safe?

Yes. Both available vaccines have been rigorously tested and approved by the MHRA. Millions of doses have been given worldwide.

Can I have the RSV vaccine at the same time as flu or COVID-19 vaccines?

Yes. You can have RSV, flu, and COVID-19 vaccines on the same day in different arms. Your pharmacist will advise.

How much does the RSV vaccine cost?

Private RSV vaccination is available at Fulham Palace Pharmacy. Ask your pharmacist for current pricing and eligibility.

When should I get vaccinated?

Autumn and early winter are ideal. RSV peaks from November through March in the UK. Getting vaccinated before peak season offers the best protection.

Will the vaccine stop me catching RSV?

The vaccine does not prevent infection entirely, but it dramatically reduces the chance of severe illness, hospital admission, and death. Most vaccinated people who do catch RSV have mild symptoms.

Can I get the vaccine on the NHS?

RSV vaccination is available on the NHS for adults aged 60 and over, and for younger people with specific conditions. Check with your GP surgery first. If you do not qualify or prefer not to wait, private vaccination is available.
